So last Sunday Marc and I were at Petsmart, and we were checking out all the kittens they had there for adoption. We went through our usual, "oh, let's get that one!" routine, but I don't think either of us were ready to commit long-term to another cat.
We saw though, that they were looking for foster homes, and fostering is something I'd always thought about doing, although mostly with dogs. But we decided to see about fostering some kittens - we'd be doing a good thing, and we'd get to have kittens in the house without the long-term commitment. The people were ecstatic when we asked, and they said they'd be contacting us right away. They weren't kidding, I got an e-mail the next day.
So last night we picked up our first foster, which was an orange tabby and her four kittens. The mom is really sweet, and the kittens are so cute. Three of them are orange, and one is gray. The only bad thing is that they're badly infested with fleas, so we're going to have to get rid of those somehow. Luckily, all our pets are protected with Frontline/Advantage.
Last night I also volunteered to help them with their medical clinic, which they hold every Thursday night for all the foster cats. It was pretty cool - I learned how to vaccinate and do an exam, and I also learned how to draw blood, although that didn't go quite as well. I tried on a kitten, and managed to get the vein, but I pulled back on the needle accidentally, and when it came out, blood started pouring out. I felt so bad! So I think next week I'll try on an adult cat.
But one thing that's funny - Stubby has been way out of sorts ever since last night. I don't know if it's the new cats (they're being kept in our guest bathroom right now), or the fact that I put Advantage on him last night, but he's hissing at everything right now. Me, the dogs, everything!
This should be an interesting experience. :)
