A Day Late

| | Comments (3)

Well, I was going to blog yesterday as promised, but I ended up needing to be at work at 6:30 am, which required that I go to sleep early on Tuesday, which meant that I had no time to compile all my photos.

Anyways, here's my foot story. (It's really not THAT interesting.) Back when I was in high school, I tried out for the softball team my sophomore year. I ended up not playing on the team - partly because I was wearing glasses at the time, and discovered that a softball in the face sucked, but sucked worse when you were wearing glasses. But the big reason why was because we had to run, and run a LOT, and after a few days, my left foot was absolutely killing me.

It ended up being hard to even walk, and I had no idea why. It wasn't like a sprained an ankle or anything - the pain was in a bone above my instep. So my parents decided to take me to see a doctor.

The doctor was a story in itself. I say ITself, because we never did find out if it was a man or a woman. I don't recall the name of the doctor, but that might not have mattered anyways, since the doc was Chinese (of course, haha).

He/she was quite rotund, and so it was hard to tell if he/she had breats, or just man-boobs. The face and hair was completely androgynous, as was the voice. The doctor dressed like a man, except that he/she wore loafers that had little bows on them.

Even my parents didn't know, although my dad guessed the doctor was a woman, since he saw him/her walking into the ladies' room. Coupled with the bow-shoes, I guess it was probably a woman.

Anyways, so back to my foot. After doing an x-ray, the doctor told my parents that I had an extra bone in my foot, right above my instep. She (I will just use "she" from now on) said that this happened in 1 out of 10 people, and that it was the bone rubbing on the inside of my shoe that was causing my problem.

They did some sort of procedure to remove scar tissue, and the doctor suggested my parents look into getting me some orthotics. I ended up wearing an ace bandage for a while, stopped running so much, and my foot was eventually fine, so we never did go. I think we thought it was sort of a bunch of quackery anyways. I mean, extra bone? Ha!

So since I stopped running (pretty much after PE ended in high school), I haven't had any problems with my foot, and I pretty much don't think about it anymore. But the other day, for some reason, I thought about Googling "extra bone in foot." I don't know why this never occurred to me before, especially since I've had internet access for like, forever.

And it turns out there IS such a thing as an extra bone above the instep, and it DOES occur in about 10% of the population!

It is called the accessory navicular.

So after reading that article and others, it occurred to me that normal feet wouldn't have a bump above the instep. When I got home that night, I asked Marc to show me his feet, and sure enough, he doesn't have that bump! All my life, I thought it was normal.

Here's a picture of my foot (I've just been told this is hard to look at - this is looking down at the top of the foot, and the toes are at the top of the picture - I didn't include them on purpose, bad nail polish):

Is it true? Do most people not have this bump? Everyone check your feet for me. This is life changing for me, I tell you.

Fish Tank Stand Update

So the fish tank stand now has a number of legs to it (I did manage to find time to work on it, in between taking pictures of my feet). Here's a couple pictures - one of the base, and another of the base with the plywood attached.

If I have time after agility tonight, I'll probably work on putting the top frame together.

*Maybe* I have a bump there? It doesn't stick out as much as your picture, and I've never had foot problems... maybe I am just imagining it?

Well my coworker, Christine, came by earlier to show me her foot, and she has a teeny little bump, but it's not like mine. I guess that's probably just the regular navicular, sans accessory bone. ;)

nope, no extra bone in my foot. although i also see a little bump like other people.
