Peddling My Wares

I have this one soft coral in our tank that grows like a weed. I got it for free at a frag ("frag" is short for "fragment" - ie, a small piece of coral) swap last year. It started out very small, but grew pretty quickly, and it managed to survive even in the yucky conditions I had in the temporary tank after we moved.

Anyways, since we set up the new tank, this stuff has been growing like crazy, and I decided to make frags from it. I made three of them, and you couldn't even tell that I'd removed anything from the main colony. My plan was to trade them in at the fish store for store credit, and since this stuff grows so easily and is so pervasive, I figured $5 for each frag (the store gives you about 50% of what they'd sell it for) would be a good deal. I bagged them up and brought them in, and the guy there offered me $35 for all three! Not bad at all. I ended up using half of it to buy a fish (a yellow coris wrasse). I'll have to go back in and see how much they're selling them for. The guy even told me I could probably bring some more in next weekend.

The last coral I traded in looked like it sold really quickly - we spotted it in a display the day after, and then the following day it was gone. I'm curious to know how well these will sell.

Anyways, our weekend was pretty low key. On Saturday, we went to visit Marc's great aunt at a nursing home in Walnut Creek. It's actually not a bad place, as far as nursing homes go, I guess. His great aunt is 96, and is still pretty sharp and funny. It's actually pretty amazing.

We had dinner with my dad and aunt and uncle. My aunt and uncle are returning to Hong Kong on Thursday (they had been living in Fremont for the past few years). Leslie was also returning from his vacation in Oahu that evening, and Marc and I offered to pick him up from the airport to save my mom a trip. Kenny went with us.

Leslie's flight was supposed to arrive at 8:30, but he didn't give anyone his flight number, so there was no way for us to check the status of it. It ended up that his flight had been delayed until 9:11. Pair that up with our inability to get him on his cell phone, and we ended up waiting around and circling around for quite a bit.

We didn't do much on Sunday. We got up and went out for breakfast, and Marc did some cleaning/unpacking while I made my trip down to the fish store. I have 4 or 5 boxes of VHS tapes I need to get rid of. Most were tapes of TV shows that I recorded when I was in college. I'm not really sure what to do with them. I suppose someone out there might still have a use for tapes? Or else I need to find out how to get them recycled.

My brothers came over in the afternoon and we went and played tennis for a bit. I don't know why I suck so badly at this sport, but I do. I can hit a baseball with a bat, but for some reason I whiff at tennis balls an extraordinary amount.

My parents then came up afterwards, and we all went to have dinner at Amici's.

In other news, my coworker sent me this article today - a school in Georgia has apparently decided to join the 21st century, by having their first - gasp! - integrated prom! Boy howdy, imagine dat!
