Last night was disco night on AI, and I kinda figured it was going to be bad, which it mostly was. Disappointing, considering we're down to the final four. I think I felt underwhelmed with the final four last year too, so I'm wondering if America is running out of talent, heh. Anyways, since last night generally sucked, and I've missed most of AI "Rewind," I've decided to do my own "Rewind" of Season 1.
First though, when they introduced Barry Gibb on last night's episode, my first thought was, "Barry Gibb's the mentor? I thought they were doing the Bee Gees. Well, whatevs."
Turns out Barry Gibb was in the Bee Gees, which was a surpise to me. Apparently, I have managed to go through 28 years of living thinking that the Bee Gees were women. Oops.
Anyways, Barry Gibb seems cool - but he talks with an extreme lateral lisp for some reason.
Melinda's performances were both vocally great, which is pretty much to be expected, and I think the judges are worried that she's become boring with her consistency. And because this is the week where we've historically seen a lot of shocking exits, I voted for Melinda a bunch of times last night.
LaKisha wasn't very good last night - I loved that she totally ignored Gibb's advice on the first song (to sing it in a higher register), because that has been LaKisha's M.O. this entire season. It's become a running gag on the show. Love it.
Blake was very meh for me, and the beatboxing was lame. I still don't think he's a very good vocalist.
Jordin was okay for the first song, and meh on the second. I like her less and less each week, possibly because the show producers are so obviously trying to pimp her to win it all. And "one of the greatest singers?" Barry, please.
Alright, so here's my version of AI "Rewind" - because Season 1 was so much better than this crap.
I don't think Season 1 had a lot of the early audition episodes - not like today, where the auditions seem to last for weeks. I like these episodes though, so I don't really mind. I'm not sure where I drifted off from the show that year - I think it was after Hollywood week.
Here's a couple of audition clips:
Kelly Clarkson (who wasn't shown at all originally until voting actually started in Top 30 week - this is from the Rewind show):
Justin Guarini (during Hollywood week):
Tamyra Gray (whoever made this video put a really annoying Mariah intro on it, and unfortunately it was the only one I could find):
Justin was probably a better singer than any of this year's guys - it's just too bad that he was sometimes too smarmy and Sideshow Bob-ish. I may include more of his clips, or I may not.
Anyways, back to this year's show - I think LaKisha is going home. Blake could just as easily, but I think he'll have enough prepubescent girls voting for him to stay.
One final non-AI note - our anemone split! I don't know what caused it, but it had gotten pretty big (probably 10-11" wide), and maybe the heat the past couple of days stressed it enough to split. So now we have two - I'll have to try to remove one and sell it, because I only want one in the tank. At least anemones sell pretty well.
