I Save You!

I just finished up getting recertified for First Aid/CPR. Pity the poor person who has me as their only recourse for aid!

It was kind of cool though, because we did get to learn how to use AED's (those portable defibrillators). I have a little first aid kit now too, whee!

So yesterday Marc and I didn't carpool because he had to work late, and because I had to go...shopping. I bought some earrings for the wedding (as well as another pair just 'cause), and then spent way too much money at Sephora.

We both got home barely in time to catch AI, where the three semifinalists performed three songs each - one judge's pick, one producers' pick, and one choice of their own. Jordin did okay, but I'm officially off the Jordin train for a number of reasons (one of them being that stupid heart thing she keeps doing with her hands when they call out her numbers) so I wasn't going to vote for her unless she totally blew me away, which she didn't. Also, her reactions were strange...like the whole, "whaaat?" thing had me going "what?" myself. But, as we're always reminded, she's only 17, so it's not surprising to see some oddness.

Blake had songs that were better suited for his voice, although I'm pretty convinced at this point that it's impossible to perform a Sting/Police song without either sounding not as good, or copycat, because Sting's voice is so iconic. I did like his last performance, even though I didn't know the song.

Melinda was solid, as usual, and I think Randy chose that Whitney song because he wanted to test her range (he almost said as much). And...I'm not sure she passed. My memory isn't the best, but I don't know that we've heard any really upper range notes from Melinda. She's a great singer, always spot on and technically great, but I wonder how big her range is. I kind of thought she biffed that one high note - I think she was using her head voice, because I don't think she can hit that note with her chest voice. I like her second performance better.

I ended up voting for Melinda a few times, and was going to throw a vote Blake's way, but didn't realize that voting was only for 2 hours last night, and missed the window. Oops.

I am so meh about this season, although less than I was last season. Melinda definitely deserves a career, but that's about all I can say.

Rewind - One of the Best Weeks!

So the theme for the top 6 was Big Band (or as some called it, "The Get Nikki Voted Off" theme). On the surface, it sounds like a disaster, but it actually produced a couple of the best performances that year.

For this week, they actually have a live band (that first year, I think all they had was piped in tracks).

Tamyra starts off with "Minnie the Moocher":

I couldn't find a clip with the judges comments, but they all loved her. Solid performance from Tamyra, as usual, and the scatting seemed well done. She was really dressed for the era.

Justin does "Route 66" next:

It's not bad, although apparently he messed up some words, and consequently some geography, but I didn't notice. Again, no comments in the vid, but the judges liked it.

Nikki did "Hard-Hearted Hannah," which I guess was the most "rock" song fitting the theme that she could find. No YouTube vid, sadly. Too bad, because I was curious to see it. The judges sort of liked it and sort of not liked it, I guess.

Christina did "The Glory of Love," and I couldn't find a video for it. The TWOP recapper noted that her vibrato was there in the beginning, but when she tried to correct it, her notes went flat, which supports my thinking that she used the vibrato to help her hold a rangy note. The performance sounds like it was only so-so.

RJ sang "I Won't Dance," and boy is it hard to find vids of his. Naturally, I couldn't find one for this, because it apparently was not very good. I guess the theme overwhelmed RJ or something. I really wish I could see these mediocre performances so I could compare.

Kelly went last (the pimp spot), and sang "Stuff Like That There":

Like Tamyra, she dressed and looked the part, and the performance was overall awesome. Even her voice was different, with a Judy Garland vibe, and I think this performance was a fan favorite. I love this perfomance, and I think it's one of the two best of hers.

I think the results show for this week was when I started watching the show again, because it seems a bit familiar to me. They sang "American Bandstand" for the group sing, and it was a hot mess. Nikki butchers the solos - can she go home yet? Sadly no, as it ended up being Christina that went home - and it was sort of an odd week, because apparently she got sick and was at the hospital and not even present when they announced she was voted off.

The next week was "Burt Bacharach" week, and I think it was boring. We'll see tomorrow!

omigod....Kelly is so SKINNY! So skinny! I need to get to the gym before I blow up, too

Poor Kelly. :( She did say that the weight thing sucks, but it doesn't suck that bad or else she'd have done something about it. Hah!

BTW, I realized that I'm totally inconsistent with what tense I write in (is that grammatically correct?). Also, I can't type lately.
