Musings on Yogurt

| | Comments (3)

I'm sitting in the lab today, so I'm killing time while my cells are processing. I just finished eating a yogurt as well. I'm picky about yogurt. I only ever really eat strawberry yogurt, and I only like the fruit-on-the-bottom type. Which is impossible to find these days.

At Safeway, they only carry the pre-stirred kind. Like Yoplait, which I think tastes like crap (apologies to those who like it). I hate the smooth consistency of the pre-stirred yogurt. I prefer my yogurt to be not perfectly homogenous, and I like the texture changes that come with having little chunks of actual fruit present.

Safeway used to carry an organic brand that had fruit on the bottom, but when they redid the store, they stopped carrying it. I can't even tell you how many times I scoured the store looking for it, and how many times I asked them if they still had it (they all told me they did, but kept pointing me back to the yogurt section that decidedly did NOT have it).

The other day, on a whim, I picked up some Dannon Light and Fit yogurt, knowing it was pre-stirred, but having a craving for yogurt anyway. Much to my delight, it has actual fruit in it! And it doesn't have that pudding consistency that Yoplait has. It actually looks and tastes like a fruit-on-the-bottom yogurt that has just already been stirred. So I'm sort of thrilled about it, more than I really have any right to be about yogurt.

One last tidbit - it's called Dannon Light and Fit +0% Plus. I have no idea what that means. It's redundant and yet not. +0% what? I think they mean fat, but why can't they say +0% Fat? And how does that make sense anyways? I would think you would either say fat free, or list an actual percentage of fat, not "+" a percentage of fat. It's like they're saying that this yogurt is indeed fatty, but we didn't add any additional fat for the hell of it, and isn't that cool? And what's the Plus for? It makes my brain hurt.

Anyways, this is what happens when I'm stuck in the lab all day by myself.

Other Stuff

Took Bandit to agility last night, and boy was it hot. It's been freezing and windy every night there, and suddenly this week it was sweltering. All the dogs acted like fools, probably because of the weather.

Marc let Bandit out this morning and left him out there for a few minutes when Bandit started making all this racket. Apparently he was out there playing with his ball, which he doesn't usually do in the morning. Turns out our neighbor's kid, Trevor, was talking to Bandit from his bedroom window, and the dog loves nothing more than to show off his ball when someone's watching. Trevor's a cute kid - he's like 4 and a half, and he's always asking if we can bring Bandit out so that he can see him, despite the fact that Bandit barks at him every time. I think Bandit is starting to get used to him though, because he's starting to get less worked up, and whenever Trevor or his sister say, "Hi Bandit!" he perks up and de-stresses a bit.

I didn't watch much of "American Idol" last night - I'm so done with this season. Everyone could see this final two coming weeks ago. I'm a bit bitter, yeah.

EW has a list of the top season finales on TV, if anyone is interested.

i'm JUST like you when it comes to yogurt! i also only eat strawberry yogurt and prefer the "fruit on the bottom". I used to love the old Dannon fruit on the bottom yogurts, but they don't sell it anymore. I did find fruit on the bottom yogurt at Trader Joe's, but the strawberry flavor only had non-fat...which i don't like. i'm not sure how 1% of fat makes all the difference in the low-fat yogurts (99% fat free). they also have these yogurts called "brown cow" at Whole Foods. i like them, but the lid packaging is not the greatest and the lid can open up really easily. when we got home from the store, 1 yogurt opened accidentally.

I just checked the yogurt here at home, and apparently, these ARE fat free. Maybe you should try these, Cynthia, I like them. I still don't understand what "+0% Fat Plus" means, though. Maybe I should write them and ask.

So does Dannon not make the regular fruit on the bottom kind anymore? I know I heard they weren't as healthy because they contained more high-fructose corn syrup. Or maybe they just don't sell them in this area? Kind of like how they don't sell Sara Lee chocolate swirl pound cake (which is LOVE) in the Bay Area. I know, because I asked.

I like fruit-on-the-bottom blueberry. Dannon used to be my favorite, but then they decreased the yogurt cup size (but not the price) and then the store stopped carrying it! Now I get Brown Cow yogurt -- they actually have whole milk yogurt still, which I think tastes a lot better. :) I don't think it's as good as Dannon used to be, but it's all I can get right now, so I'm settling for it...
