Incredulous

Okay, so by now I'm sure everyone's heard about the woman that gave birth to octuplets. And the fact that she already has 6 kids. And lives with her parents. In a 3-bedroom house. And filed for bankruptcy and abadoned a home a little over a year ago. But actually, that's not even the part that bothers me.

I mean, I don't really care how many kids people have, as long as they can take care of them (and in this case, I'm not sure that's true). I mean, I think the Duggars (of "18 Kids and Counting") are batshit crazy, but at least they seem to be able to provide for their kids' care (now, their education may be another story). So whatever, procreate like bunnies if you have to, even though it's not good for our planet.

Anyways, I digress. When I first heard the story, I thought it was just another case of IUI gone awry. IUI seems to be the way most of these massive multiples occur - a woman is on fertility drugs which stimulate her to ovulate. Sometimes, hyperovulation occurs, and multiple eggs are released. In IUI, the woman is inseminated with the sperm, with fertilization occurring within the body (a cheaper method than IVF). Problem with this is that there's no control over how many eggs get fertilized - so if a woman ovulates and releases 8 eggs, there's a chance all 8 could fertilize.

So this is what I figured happened. But according to some articles, it looks like she actually got pregnant via IVF. Which means that some doctor actually purposely implanted 8 embryos into this woman, who is under the age of 35, and has had 6 previous children. No doctor in his/her right mind should ever be transferring that many embryos (IVF guidelines state 1-2 for a woman under 35, and no more than 5 in extreme cases). It's irresponsible, and ethically questionable at best. It puts the mother and the babies at significant risk, and the doctor's first responsibility is the health of his/her patient. Seriously, this doctor should lose his/her license. I'm just dumbfounded that this could happen.

I have to wonder too why this woman is undergoing fertility treatments (and how she's able to afford it when she had to file for bankruptcy) when she already has 6 kids she can't provide a home for. That's just mental.

Have a good Super Bowl weekend, all. Hey, this woman and the Duggars could each field their own football team!

IVF ... ah, no wonder the doctors at Kaiser were so quick to say that she became a patient after already being pregnant ...

Man ... add that to how expensive IVF is, that could be going towards the 6 kids she has already ... how sad ...

Yeah, there's definitely something strange with this story. A) What reputable clinic in SoCal would have done this? and B) How could she have possibly afforded it?

And why the hell would she do it? Maybe she thinks TLC will come knocking at her door. Ugh, I hope not.
